Friday 13th [1980] Deconstruction

Friday 13th 1980

Friday 13th is a cult classic when it comes to slasher flicks; its antagonist and villain Jason Voorhees becoming the face of the well-known franchise.
The movie hits off with a happy scene of campers singing 'Hallelujah' around a campfire; an enclosed and dimly lit space giving comfort and safety to the campers.
This of course, juxtaposes with the frequent cuts of a mysterious figure that seems to be lurking around just close by, with the signature "ch-ch-ch-ha-ha-ha" sounds to follow.
Wearing bright yellow shirts, the campers exude a peaceful and happy mood, unaware of what is to come once two leave the rest of the crowd and become intimate with each other alone; the perfect moment for any killer to catch two unsuspecting teens off guard.
Not soon after they initiate such activities, does the killer approach them; using handheld shots, the audience see exactly what the killer does and bares witness to their tragic demises.

The shaky and frantic angles of the camera from a first person point of view further increases the audience's sympathy for the victims, as there are several close ups of their horrified exhortations and screams.
One of the last frames before the title appears is the s still zoom of the teen's face; one of true terror as an incidental music technique is utilised here to prolong the expression on her face.
With loud orchestrated music of Jason's signature theme, the audience are introduced to a title screen bearing the words "Friday 13th", already giving a bad omen for the rest of the film to come.
