Summary of Research
*Based on all our research we've looked at over a few weeks, both of us are definitely sure that we would base our own film opening on the horror genre.
* This may be easy or hard, depending on which subgenre we pick. I (Shanette) like the idea of a gothic horror, based near an old church, however, from our research on Pros and Cons of Subgenres of Horror, Gothic Horror is almost certainly based in a past era, and would require a big budget to do so ( covering costumes, locations etc.)
* A slasher horror film opening may be the easiest to choose, since many of the conventions of the slasher subgenre are stereotypical, and easy to follow. On the other hand, there is the danger of becoming too "cheesy" ( like buying a basic, cheap mask for a killer instead of creating one with appropriate research behind it, so that it looks authentic, for example.
* When deconstructing movies from overlapping genres (such as Alien, a Sci-Fi/Horror film, or Rush Hour, an Action/Crime/Comedy film), all the conventions of the separate genres tend to overlap, and these movies use conventions of both, or more, which are portrayed throughout to reach the expectations of a modern audience.
*Our film opening would have to do "less" in order to be "more", so most of the fear factor rests within the sound editing and visual editing.
